| The place where we consume the most water is the bathroom. We live in the desert, and we've chosen to conserve by using our water twice. The washer and the bathtubs are a part of a larger greywater system that also feeds the fruit trees surrounding the garden. By using a biodegradable detergent that breaks down into plant nutrients, we feed and water our trees at the same time. Our toilets are low water consuming fixtures (1.6 gallons per flush). This wastewater is processed in a constructed wetland where we grow irises. The long, deep tub was carefully selected to allow a deep soak but to conserve on water. It's best though when shared with your partner. Both bathrooms are partitioned with recycled cut-steel panels. This gives them the feel of "art-deco". The south wall is a colored "Trombe" wall that collects and stores heat on winter days and radiates it to the room at night. |
