The Organic Garden

The 32' square enclosed organic garden was constructed according to Vastu principles (an ancient Hindu science of design based on directional alignments). This system of design concentrates earth energies to provide for the maximum well being and benefits of its inhabitants. The garden gates are positioned in the places that promote "All Gains," "Victory," and "Prosperity". All beds were constructed from concrete raised to a minimum of 24" high and the soil is insulated from temperature extremes with 1" of polystyrene foam. This allows a year round growing season-keeping the soil warm in the winter and cool in the summer. To keep the garden safe from visiting deer and javelina, art-deco cut-steel framing surrounds the entire garden to a height of 9'.

French Intensive techniques have been used to till the soil to a depth of two feet making for a very high yeild of vegetables in a compact space. The soil has been built using multiple techniques like yearly treatment with mychorrhiza for maximizing root and plant growth. The soil has been composted by red worms and is rich with worm castings and decomposed organic matter from the koi pond. Fertilization has only been provided by organic treatments.

To maximize moisture retention even on the hottest summer days, the beds are frequently mulched with dried horsetail and peppermint regularly harvested from around the koi pond. Sufficient rainwater is collected to water the garden almost exclusively with it, no matter what time of year.

Half of the garden is covered in shade cloth to keep the beds cool for leafy green plants like beets, kale, chard, lettuce, collards, parsley, asparagus, strawberries, and leeks. The other half of the garden is in full sun to accommodate tomatoes, beans, squash, grapes, oregano, rosemary, comfrey and blackberries.
