| Everything exists within a context. Within that context, most things are ordinary. A precious few are different. They go beyond what is expected. They are extraordinary. We call them ART. Once, we built homes that fit us. Our homes were filled with human sized spaces that looked out upon and interacted with the grandeur of nature. They were a part of the environment, not apart from the environment. They were sustainable because nature sustained them. Once, we built with enduring materials that lasted for generations. We took pride in what we did with our own hands and worked with loving attention. We built for our great-grandchildren. What we produced was real. Once, we valued the home as a place of physical and spiritual refuge. It protected us and integrated us with our world as it is, at this special moment, in this beautiful place. Its value was intrinsic and not calculated. It was precious. |
